  • Obama touts Paris accord despite US withdrawal

04.07.2017 | Former US President Barack Obama championed global leaders' commitment to the Paris Agreement despite Washington's withdrawal from the accord, the media reported."The Paris agreement, even with the temporary absence of US leadership, will still be a critical factor in helping our children solve the enormous challenge in civilisation," Obama said on Monday at a Seoul conference organised by South Korea's Chosun Ilbo media group.President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement in June was criticised by some as shifting leadership of global efforts to limit climate change to Asia, Trump said last month that he was open to renegotiating aspects of the agreement -- which was inked under his Democratic predecessor and which all nations except two have signed onto.In his speech, Obama highlighted the role China plays in allowing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's regime to continue."China is the one country North Korea does depend on to some extent and the elites depend on to access foreign currency, basic supplies that are important to the regime," the former President said.Obama also noted that Kim governs a bit differently than his father who preceded him, but is still a threat, CNN reported."Pyongyang doesn't always listen to China," Obama said, adding "Unlike the father, the son often times has engaged in fairly significant diplomatic insults of Beijing in a way we haven't seen before and in a way that surprised China.""You have a young man who is only interested in maintaining power and is willing to do anything to sustain that," Obama added.

Brexit should herald European reawakening: Italian PM

30.03.2017 |Italy will work "in a friendly spirit towards the UK" to make sure Brexit provides "an opportunity for a European reawakening", Premier Paolo Gentiloni said Wednesday as Britain began its divorce from the European Union."Italy is gearing up for the (Brexit) negotiations coming months in a friendly spirit towards the United Kingdom."Our priorities will be confidence in the EU's future, its unity in the negotiations with London and the defence of our national interests, both on an economic level, and over the rights acquired by our co-citizens in Britain", he said."Italy is working to make sure the Brexit shock is an opportunity for a European reawakening," Gentiloni added. As had occurred at other moments in the EU's 60-year history, difficult times can help it rediscover the reasons for its existence and find its way forward, he said. Gentiloni was due to speak to his British counterpart Theresa May by phone later, sources at the Italian Prime Minister's office said.In one of the most significant steps by a British leader since World War II, May notified EU Council President Donald Tusk in a hand-delivered letter that Britain would leave the club it joined in 1973, invoking Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty.

  • Need for clear alternative to BJP-RSS, says CPI-M
Need for clear alternative to BJP-RSS, says CPI-M

16.03.2017 | The Uttar Pradesh verdict underlines the need for "a clear cut alternative political and ideological platform to the BJP and the RSS", the CPI-M has said."This requires both a political alternative to the Hindu communal agenda and an alternative policy platform to the neo-liberal policies," said an editorial in the CPI-M journal "People's Democracy". "The muscular Hindu nationalism has to be countered by a firm secular, anti-imperialist nationalism. "The victory of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh marks the continuation of the rightwing offensive which began in the country after the Lok Sabha election," the Communist Party of India-Marxist said. "The fusion of neo-liberalism and Hindutva will get further cemented. "This presages more attacks on secular values, freedom of expression and democratic rights. The growing authoritarianism will need to be resisted and fought back through united movements in all spheres." The Bharatiya Janata Party with its smaller allies won 325 of the 403 seats and polled 41.4 percent of the vote, just fractionally lower than the percentage polled in the Lok Sabha election."The fact that (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and (BJP President) Amit Shah could replicate the sweep of the victory in the Lok Sabha election in both scale and intensity shows that the Hindu communal consolidation combined with a wide ranging caste coalition which was cemented with a communal nationalist appeal, has worked this time too," the CPI-M said."Modi continues to retain his appeal as a strong Hindu nationalist leader who can deliver on development. But this latter aspect is also coded with a majoritarian appeal."It said that though the Samajwadi Party and the BSP were essentially regional parties of Uttar Pradesh, they have no regional identity and there was no regionalized politics in the state. "People of UP see themselves not as part of any distinct regional-state identity but in national terms. They are thus more susceptible to the national appeal. "In this case, the communal message was embedded within a nationalist appeal."The main non-BJP parties - SP and BSP who have together more than 44 percent of the vote - had no counter to this communal-nationalist platform and to Modi's economic policies. "The narrow caste identity politics and their competitive wooing of the Muslim vote could not match the overarching appeal of Hindu nationalism which cut across caste lines," the editorial said.
